Bonalu Celebrations

August 2 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Bonalu is one of the most vibrant and significant festivals of Telangana, celebrated in honor of Goddess Mahakali. Observed during the Telugu month of Ashada (July–August), the festival is a thanksgiving offering to the Goddess for protecting people from diseases, hardships, and natural calamities. Bonalu has been recognized as the State Festival of Telangana since 2014.

The word “Bonam” means meal or offering. Women prepare a special offering of rice cooked with milk and jaggery in decorated earthen or brass pots adorned with neem leaves, turmeric, vermilion, and a lit lamp. Dressed in colorful traditional attire, they carry these Bonam pots on their heads in grand processions to Mahakali temples, where they offer prayers for the health, prosperity, and well-being of their families.

One of the most exciting highlights of Bonalu is Pothuraju, believed to be the brother and protector of Goddess Mahakali. Covered in turmeric, wearing ankle bells and a red dhoti, Pothuraju leads the procession with energetic dances to the beats of traditional drums, creating a festive atmosphere. Other important rituals include Ghatam, a decorated sacred pot carried in processions, and Rangam, where a woman believed to be possessed by the Goddess delivers prophetic messages to devotees.

Bonalu is celebrated with great devotion across Telangana, including Sangareddy district, where Mahankali, Pochamma, and Yellamma temples attract thousands of devotees. The festival features special pujas, cultural performances, folk music, traditional dances, temple fairs, and community feasts, reflecting Telangana’s rich cultural heritage and spirit of unity.
